Temporomandibular Disease

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) is similar to Sleep Apnea. The signs and symptoms are a lot alike. When a person has a hard time breathing at night, the body struggles to get air your neck – this causes the mouth and face muscles to become so overworked that it creates a jaw and TMD issue. The first step to addressing your TMD issue is to make an appointment with our dental providers that specialize in TMD and Sleep Disorders. If you suffer from TMD, the joint issue may be because of an alignment problem with the jaw. TMD can be caused by any traumatic event, ranging from sports injuries, car accidents, or even simple actions like turning your head to look at something. When the teeth alignment and jaw alignment are not in a proper rested position, this can cause muscle strain, muscle pain, and neuromuscular issues. Neuromuscular issues that come from teeth alignment problems (malocclusion) can create a domino effect starting in the head/neck area, and continuing to the spine, shoulders, hips, back, and feet. Symptoms of TMD:
  • Snoring
  • Chronic Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Clicking or Popping of the jaw / joint
  • Pain or limited strength when chewing
  • Facial and Neck Pain, Stiffness, and weakness of jaw
  • Difficulty closing teeth together
